Principal Lynne Zahn said she had to be available at all times over the summer to meet with movers and oversee renovations. She also added 19 new staff members as Belle Isle took on fifth grade classes, added electives and filled vacancies.
Summer Is Over – Embrace Change
Like summer turning to autumn, the seasons of our lives inevitablychange over time. Some change gradually, others suddenly and unexpectedly. Youand I cannot stop the changes from occurring, but we do have power over ourattitude and outlook. We can resent the new season and become bitter for losingwhat was, or we can accept the new and find ways to embrace it.
When you accept, embrace, and learn from change, you inevitably grow stronger. The ability to continuously accept change allows you to become as solid as a rock in the midst of violent storms all around you, even if you feel afraid.
How do we emulate this type of learning and engage teachers to embrace change? I believe that educators, literacy coaches, principals, any other school leaders or professional learning consultants can use five techniques to help teachers embrace change.
Another aspect that encourages change is Respect. Teachers of the 21st Century are often questioned by parents, administrators, politicians, and the public in general. There was a day in our country when teachers were trusted to do their job. That era is long gone; therefore, if teachers see us as yet one more entity who disapproves of the job they are doing, we will lose our audience before we begin. This is why I begin every session I teach by stating how much I appreciate what any group of teachers is already doing. I begin by thanking them for the job they do and the hours they put in. I share with them that I believe this is the hardest job in the world AND the most important. I warn them that throughout the day I will be challenging their thinking and asking them to consider new ways of doing things. I then remind them that they are ALREADY doing a super job and I know this. I share with them how hard it was for me to change my methods during my career and how I hated every fall when the newest best program had just come along, and I was to throw the baby out with the bath water and begin again. This often leads to sharing a sample or anecdote as in step one from above to show them just what happened when I did embrace these new changes.
With signs of summer all around, another shift in seasons is before us. And whether we are finishing a semester of school, helping our family transition to summer schedules, or simply readying our closets with flip-flops and swimsuits, change is upon us.
The district is currently looking for a new clinics manager as long-time employee, Gabrielle Chain, stepped down from her position this summer. Chain had been with Lincoln Hospital and Clinics for over 28 years and served in many roles.
BroadFutures empowers young people with learning and attention issues through an innovative, holistic program that combines career and college readiness with mentoring and paid internships. Less than 50% of young people with learning and attention issues finish their post secondary education or find full time employment. BroadFutures is committed to changing the present paradigm, preparing young people for their futures and ensuring they have equal opportunities for success!\nBroadFutures is the only program of its kind in the country. In just eight short years of programming, we have rapidly expanded. We started with five local participants in the summer of 2014 and three employer partners. We have now served over 200 young people from all across the country and hundreds more through outreach efforts. We have also partnered with over 50 employers, resulting in mutually beneficial outcomes for the young people we serve as well as our employers who recognize the many benefits of a diverse and inclusive workforce.
