NYU’s Diversity Breakfast: A Celebration of Inclusion and Belonging

After the speech, five professionals and I sat on a panel. We represented a diverse range of careers, including engineering, media, finance, and law, from companies such as Ernst & Young, CNN, and Parsons Brinckerhoff. We each spoke about our experiences and the advantages they gave us, how we obtained our positions, and the role of diversity within our companies.

"We are extremely disappointed by the insensitive and offensive actions taken by one of our employees who did not follow policy and processes," Victoria Pasquale, Aramark Regional Vice President, said in a statement. "The individual acted independently in a way that runs counter to our values and compromised our longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. We have suspended the employee pending a full investigation. We are also re-training all employees to ensure a regrettable incident like this is not repeated. Again, we apologize for the mistake and commit to do better in the future."

Aimed at ensuring all STEM faculty use inclusive teaching practices and that institutions increase the diversity of their STEM professoriate, participating universities begin their work with a self-assessment of current practices and assets. The institutions will then develop and implement campus action plans to drive change and scale such efforts across all their STEM programs.

Despite the centrality of diversity in learning and student success, efforts to increase underrepresented faculty have not been as successful as intended, particularly in STEM. A 2019 NSF analysis revealed that underrepresented minority faculty occupied a mere 9 percent of professorships in STEM fields at four-year institutions. Other research shows when underrepresented students are taught by diverse faculty members they achieve at significantly higher rates; as much as 20 to 50 percent of the course achievement gaps between minority and majority students are eliminated.

NYU has traditions which have persisted across campuses. Since the beginning of the 20th century initiation ceremonies have welcomed incoming NYU freshmen. At the Bronx University Heights Campus, seniors used to grab unsuspecting freshmen, take them to a horse-watering trough, and then dunk them head-first into what was known colloquially as "the Fountain of Knowledge". This underground initiation took place until the 1970s.[233] Today freshmen take part in university-sponsored activities during what is called "Welcome Week".[234] In addition, throughout the year the university traditionally holds Apple Fest (an apple-themed country fest that began at the University Heights campus), the Violet Ball (a dance in the atrium of Bobst Library), Strawberry Fest (featuring New York City's longest Strawberry Shortcake), and the semi-annual midnight breakfast where Student Affairs administrators serve free breakfast to students before finals.[235]

How to Walk the Talk of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Your OrganizationWanda James, New York UniversityMarisol Marrero, New York UniversityDiversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) are highly sensitive topics that may cause discomfort to many when the subjects are brought up. Colleges and universities are making commitments to align their business practices to reflect and capture the best practices of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of life on campus. Our session will dive into how we, as a small department within a large private university, decided to take up the challenge of walking the talk of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We will discuss how we created a committee within our small department to research best practices in higher education and use that information as guiding principles in our efforts.

Over the past year, the world has witnessed multiple events that have shone a bright light on systemic racism and social injustice. These events have served as a catalyst to identify attitudes that contribute to these conditions and shift established mindsets towards creating new systems that result in increased diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). At an organizational level, it is imperative that institutions revisit their culture, behavioral norms, operations, and structure to determine whether it promotes and values diversity of stakeholders and thinking, provides a sense of belonging for all, and removes barriers to access and success. Glen Jones and Reshma Patel-Jackson have worked together for several years to shape strategic priorities for the NCAA, with DEI serving as a strategic priority for the associations, student-athletes, and governing bodies. They will share best practices and lessons learned with successfully executing a DEI framework and the critical role that business leaders play in the process.

The staff experience and staff wellness are critically important to the student thriving, a healthy organizational culture, and cost management of recruitment-related expenses. Particular attention must be paid to the connections between staff wellness and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) to build and sustain an engaged community. In this presentation, we will discuss how the Office of Undergraduate Education & Academic Student Services (UEAS) at American University has embraced this philosophy through the development and implementation of team-wide wellness principles and activities. We will examine how the UEAS wellness principles and activities guide decisions, boost faculty/staff morale, and contribute to a community of care. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation.
